As of Tuesday night, Potential Tropical Cyclone One in the southwest gulf of Mexico has an 80% chance to be upgraded to the first Tropical Storm of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Alberto. Alberto is expected to make landfall 1AM. Thursday in northern Veracruz or southern Tamaulipas, Mexico, but it will flood the atmosphere over south Texas with moisture and cause persistent rain over the next few days in San Antonio. A Flood Watch is in effect until June 20 at 1:00PM. The rain is expected to begin late Wednesday morning, but chances taper off through Wednesday night. Then, Thursday afternoon, more thunderstorms are expected to pop up and rain chances continue through Friday. San Antonio is expected to receive 2-3 inches of rain through this event, but local amounts up to 6 inches are possible. Overall the rain will be beneficial because our area is in a drought, but that means that sudden rainfall will cause excessive runoff on dry soil and isolated flash floods will be likely, especially in low lying areas. An isolated tornado along with the system can't be ruled out Wednesday, but the chances are very low. Find out if you are in a low-lying area that is prone to flooding, and make sure you and your family have a flood plan and emergency kit. Monitor alerts and rainfall forecasts for your area. Stay alert, and if you see water levels rising, be prepared to evacuate and move to higher ground. See WeatherWise's Flash Flood Flyers for more information.
